The biggest game of the year is finally here! Students and alumni from all years come to see King/Drew play our rivals, Gardena High School.
Before the game started, we had a huge pep rally for both girls and boys basketball teams, and the cheerleaders. The pep rally recognizes every player so that they can know how important they are to us and the school and to pump up the crowd.
“I hope that we can win the game, but you don’t know until the final score, but I’m always hopeful.” – Wayne Pollard
Sadly the girls’ varsity basketball team did not win the game.
“If we play the cards right we should win. If they (K/D boys) play lazy and don’t communicate on the court and pass the ball we will not do to good. We get out and hustle we should win.” – Luther, the Security Guard
Luther goes to every basketball game that king drew has and he knows how we been playing over the years. He knows that all the boys have to do is communicate. Communication is the key to success.
“Yes, we will win the game. We have been practicing hard, conditioning, and staying focus to insure we accomplish our goals.” – Jervon, #1, Team Captain
Jervon had high hopes to win the game just like Marissa did, but the question is, are they going to win?
When the game started the boys started off strong. The players hussled through and strived to score high.
Half time consisted of a lovely performance from the dance team and cheerleaders. The crowd really enjoyed the music and the dances were very lively.
When we came back for the third quarter, the team was playing to the best of their ability. Chance is a good athlete; He and Jervon were running up and down the court blocking the shots from the opposite team. By time the fourth quarter came, we already knew we were going to win. When the clock was counting down the last few seconds the crowd stood up cheering and once the buzzer went off for the final time and the crowd went wild. That was the best Gardena game since 2011.
That’s the best way to start off the New Year.
