Is late start a good idea? There has been some students stating and spreading the idea that the new principal is considering having late start. Late start is on certain days during the week in which school starts later than it normally does. At most schools late start is at 9 am.
Late start is used at many schools and some schools prefer it. It is useful for teachers, students, and their parents. It may even be more convenient, considering that teachers have children and with the extra time in the morning they would be able to take their kids to school.
Even though late start at King/Drew is not a sure thing, students were asked upon their opinion on late start.
When asked if she thought late start was a good idea, Tanjanae Walter (12th grade), said “Yes, because I would like to get more rest after all of the homework that I have the night before.” When asked why he thinks the principle is considering late start, Jordan Robinson (12th grade), said “I think he thinks we need more rest (at night) rather than just getting up early.”
There are many benefits of late start such as less costly, higher attendance rates, better test scores, better grades, less tardiness, less consumption of caffeinated drinks, less teen car crashes, and students are more likely to get the recommended full 8 hours of sleep.
