Mattel, the famous toy company, has made the decision to now diversify their dolls in Barbie line. Barbie has always been the face of dolls and now that face, along with the body are going through a few tweaks and changes.
Mattel has always had their original Barbie, who is bleach blonde with blue eyes, not too dark but not too pale, and of average height. But, now, they have decided to enter 2016 with the introduction of the curvy, tall, and petite body types. Although that is already a drastic change, they have went a step further and introduced different races.
Yes, races have already been implemented into the world of Barbie, but really they were just rehashes of the original barbie in different colors. You can spray paint a Barbie green from head to toe and say it is an alien Barbie.
This is a big deal in society, it is starting to make the dolls that we know today look more like the women we see each day. Every woman cannot and will not look like the original Barbie that so many of us, including our female children, have set as our ideal portrayal of what a woman should look like.
“This is what I’ve been waiting for my whole life, it makes me happy seeing that Mattel has acknowledged that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes,” says Tanjanae Walter.
Christopher Udo had a very positive outlook and view on the matter, saying, “It’s a good thing that they’re making the dolls more diverse and realistic, all the beautiful intelligent women I see everyday are the ones that should’ve been cast as the model for [Barbie] from the very start.”
