There were rumors around the quad on the first week of school that there would not be a cheer team at King/Drew. These rumors were spread around, due to Ms. Johnson, the former cheer coach stepping back as the coach this year and not coaching.
The cheerleaders were disappointed about hearing there may not be a cheer team this year. Senior cheerleader Tatianna Whitehurst said, “I will feel hurt because I’ve been on the cheer team since the 9th grade and this is my senior year. I would like to finish it out.”
One of King/Drew’s starter basketball players, Khani Rice said, “YES! I would like there to be a cheer team.” The cheerleaders’ cheering at the basketball games really helps motivate the basketball players and helps pump up the crowd.
Without cheerleaders, who will help the boys win the games, and who will make the crowd go crazy? The cheerleaders are an important part of the basketball games. It is not easy for them to keep the players motivated. It takes a lot of practice to learn cheers to keep the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams pumped.
These rumors have been spread among the student body at King/Drew, including staff and students who barely go outside. “I feel bad because every year there’s a cheer team and it’s going to be crazy without one,” said senior Ashley Jackson.
Fortunately, Ms. Johnson said, “Yes there will be a cheer team this year.” However, she stated that she will not be coaching it this year and that King/Drew’s cheer team will instead have a new coach.
Every basketball team should have a cheer team for support during their games. Even though Ms. Johnson will not be the cheer coach this school year, it is a relief to know that the basketball teams will still have a cheer team to support them during their games.
