King Drew’s girl’s volleyball is known for being one of the best in their Marine League Section. They have a great coaching staff who work hard to improve the players’ overall talents and skills. This year’s varsity team is lead by captains Naadirah Rahmaan (libero) and Dominique Pruitt (outside hitter). Last year the lady eagles finished 3rd in their section. This season has 6 seniors and 2 juniors. Varsity player Morghan Taylor said, her main goal this season is to go to the championships, and to go to more tournaments. Last season the team went t0 3 tournaments and did very well in all three. Last season the girls registered 322 attacks (kills), 267 aces, 131 blocks and 566 digs.
Coach Davontae Lockett said that he knows this will be a very great season for his girls, he knows they can compete with everyone and does not think any team to be problem if they play at their best. Narbonne and Carson will be the girls’ biggest competition this season. In past years the volleyball teams have not been as cohesive as this years team. The girls play as one and that affects them greatly on the court. All the girls came with a positive attitude this year which allows them to play their best game and build up one another. Chioma Abaekobe expects for the team to work together and communicate. Naadirah Rahmann said, “she expects the girls to go all out, there are no second chances we’re going to give it our all. Being captain means I must push the girls and I’m determined to do that so we can get a banner. WE MUST END THE SEASON WITH A BANG.”
The exceptions are set high this 2014-2015 volleyball season. There is no time to play around and not leave it all on the court. There are many tough teams coming for the King/Drew volleyball team but with our great coach staffing and amazing players it would be a challenge they can encounter.
